Camping with us

Houston Mesa is a beautiful wooded campground at the north edge of Payson, far enough from the town center to make it quiet but close enough that it's convenient to restaurants and shopping. The campground is located at an elevation of 5,200 ft. in a mixed forest and shrub area, with spacious campsites offering both sun and shade.

We have Sites _______. The sites are non-electric, but the campground has restrooms, showers, and potable water. Well-behaved pets are welcome.

Friday and Saturday evenings we will gather for a BYOB "happy hour". At night we will sit around a campfire. When you register, let us know if you'd like to have a potluck Saturday night.

Hiking with us (or on your own)

Your trip leader will lead a visit to the impressive Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, about 20 minutes' drive from the campground. There you can enjoy the easily accessible park, visitors center, and views of the bridge; you can also take a challenging hike down to the creek under the bridge.

Patagonia Lake - East Loop Camping -DRAFT (05/08/2026)

Tucked away in the rolling hills of southeastern Arizona is a hidden treasure. Patagonia Lake State Park, established in 1975 as a state park and is an ideal place to find whitetail deer roaming the hills and great blue herons walking the shoreline. The park offers a campground, beach, picnic area with ramadas, tables and grills, a creek trail, boat ramps, and a marina.

Lake Patagonia is a beautiful fishing lake in the mountains just south of Tucson and just north of Nogales. It has camping sites; a boat dock and launch ramp; restrooms; camping store and visitor center. Most of the camping sites have electricity and water. The east section has larger sites and are best suited for large RV’s, car and trailer camping. To make the event cost effective; we need to site-share. Tents will share a site with RV's/trailers.

We will have a group dinner in the campground on Saturday night. DA will provide hamburgers and hot dogs and water. Guests will bring a side dish or dessert. If you want to join the fun but don’t want to camp, the town of Patagonia is only 10 minutes away and they have fun motels and hotels. The town has some cool shops and restaurants to explore. Nogales is about 15 miles down the road On the way home on Sunday, plan to stop in Sonoita and visit the wineries. The best way to get to Patagonia is to take I 10 past Tucson to State route 83. Go south on 83 to Sonoita to where it dead ends into state route 82. Turn right on 82 and go to the lake just past the town of Patagonia.

The campground overlooks the lake where anglers catch crappie, bass, bluegill, catfish, and trout. The park is popular for water skiing, fishing, camping, picnicking, and hiking. And the tracks of the New Mexico/Arizona railroad lie beneath the lake and remnants of the old historic line may be found at the Nature Conservancy in Patagonia. Hikers can stroll along the creek trail and see birds such as the canyon towhee, Inca dove, vermilion flycatcher, black vulture, and several species of hummingbirds.

Our (East) sites have 20/30 amp and 50 amp voltage. Campsite lengths vary but most can accommodate any size RV. Quiet hours (no generators, music, or loud voices) are from 9 p.m. – 8 a.m.

Check-in time is 2 p.m. Arriving earlier than 2 p.m. does not guarantee the sites’ availability. Check-out time is 12 noon on the scheduled departure date.

Park gates will be open from 4 a.m. to 10 p.m. All camping guests with reservations who will arrive after 10 p.m. must call the park before 4:30 p.m. to make arrangements.

Campers arriving before 12 noon on the day of arrival will be charged the park entrance fee.

Come enjoy an afternoon at Deby's beautiful home in Mesa. Bring your swimsuit and towel! Join your Desert Adventures friends for an afternoon of sun, swimming, great conversation and fantastic food!

Black Canyon Rim Camping- NEEDS A LEADER (07/02/2026)

Black Canyon Rim Campground, (elevation 7600 ft) set among towering ponderosa pine, is a favorite stopping place for those traveling on the General Crook National Recreation Trail. Fishing and boating opportunities are popular at Black Canyon Lake which is located 3 miles northeast along Forest Road 86. The historical grave site of Stott, Scott, and Wilson, three young men lynched during the Pleasant Valley War, is located within walking distance of the campground.

Fishing and boating are available on Black Canyon Lake, approximately 2.5 miles northeast of the campground.

Each campsite offers a campfire ring with grill and picnic table. Additional amenities include accessible vault toilets, drinking water and trash service. Access is on both sand and gravel roads. A campground host is available at the site.

Approximately 3 miles south of the junction of State Highway 260 and Forest Road 300. Forest Road 300 (south) is located 13 miles west of Heber, Arizona. Access the campground off Forest Road 300 via Forest Road 86.

Located within the Heber Wild Horse territory, herds of wild horses are often seen running through the area and stopping at Black Canyon Lake for water.
