MEET AT PAPAGO PARK RANGER STATION
Diversity in hiking! Each week, by Saturday night, hikers who have signed up for a Sunday hike with Jon will receive an email with the location of the Sunday hike. The hikes will be on Piestewa Peak, Dreamy Draw, or North Mountain. Adding the area to the weekly calendar on the website will also make it easy to see the location of the hike.
Surrounding the base of 2,608-foot Piestewa Peak, Phoenix Mountains Park Recreation Area, Dreamy Draw Recreation Area, in addition to North Mountain are gateways into diverse desert landscapes that offer everything from fantastic views to secluded valleys. These areas boast dozens of miles of multi-use trails.
Geology
While the actual rocks of the Phoenix Mountains (including the areas around Piestewa Peak and North Mountain) are very old. The mountain shapes are, geologically speaking, quite young. They were formed about 14 million years ago the crust of the earth was gradually stretched from northeast to southwest, elevating mountain ranges and down-dropping basins between them. Much of the area’s rock is a metamorphic type of granite known as schist. Mercury mines were harvested in today’s Dreamy Draw Recreation Area.
The hike will be approximately 1.5 hours.
